What causes vaginal itching after unprotected sex?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I recently had unprotected sex with a partner whom I know to be healthy. Since the next day, I have been experiencing vaginal discomfort that has persisted for about a week, including itching. I am concerned about the possible causes. Could it be an STD, or is there something I can do to relieve the symptoms?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Your vaginal itching might be due to a yeast infection, also known as vaginal candidiasis. This can happen after having sex without protection because of changes in vaginal pH or irritation from friction or being exposed to a partner's natural bacteria. For the most part, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) do not show signs the next day. However, trichomoniasis (a sexually transmitted parasitic infection causing vaginal itching, irritation, and abnormal discharge), chlamydia (a bacterial STI that may cause mild vaginal irritation, discharge, or be symptomless), and genital herpes (a viral STI that causes genital itching, burning, and painful blisters) can irritate or itch right away after exposure.

Since your symptoms have been going on for a week, you should get checked out to rule out STIs and find out if this is a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis, or something else. For now, do not scratch, wear clothes that are too tight, or use harsh soaps or douches that could make the itching worse. If you think you might have a yeast infection, over-the-counter antifungal creams like clotrimazole or miconazole might help. However, for a correct diagnosis and treatment, you should get a pelvic exam and an STI test.

From now on, it is recommended to wear protection during sexual activity. This will help keep your vaginal health in good shape and reduce irritation.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
