Are Cialis and Viagra safe for a kidney transplant patient?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi, Doctor,

I am a kidney transplant patient with stable kidney function.

Medications Taken:

Prograf, Prednisone, Myfortic, Concor 5 mg once, and Lipitor 20 mg. I wanted to ask for your professional advice regarding the use of Cialis 10 mg and Viagra 25 mg (as needed).

Which would be the safer and more suitable option for someone in my condition, considering potential interactions with immunosuppressants, effect on blood pressure, and overall kidney health?

I would greatly appreciate your guidance on which would be better tolerated and carry fewer risks.

Please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com

I have read your query and can understand your concern.

Phosphodiesterase 5 inhibitors (PDE5Is) have been studied in kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) as one of the treatment options for ED (erectile dysfunction), but it is always and always advised to start PDE5 inhibitors only after consulting a kidney transplant specialist or nephrologist to know their efficacy and potential medication interactions with what you are taking for kidney transplant.

I would sincerely advise you to consult your nephrologist before you start PDE5 inhibitor medication for ED. They know the latest developments about the medication interaction and dose of PDE5 inhibitors according to the kidney function test.

Reply to me if you have more concerns or questions.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
