Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a bit freaked out about my sister. Her doctor just told her she has got a vitamin D deficiency, and she has been dealing with some weird stuff. Like, she has been really confused lately, got these annoying mouth ulcers, and her legs are hurting badly. I am worried whether the sickness is actually from not having enough vitamin D? It seems so random. What is the deal with vitamin D anyway? How do you even get enough? I do not want to end up like her, so what can I do to prevent this? And how can she get better? Should I be taking supplements or something?
Please suggest.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Vitamin D deficiency can indeed lead to a range of symptoms, and it is understandable to be concerned about your sister’s health.
It plays a crucial role in calcium absorption and bone health, and a deficiency can result in symptoms like bone pain, muscle weakness, and confusion. Mouth ulcers and generalized discomfort can also be related, as vitamin D is essential for maintaining overall immune function and health.
For your sister, addressing her vitamin D deficiency typically involves a combination of dietary changes and supplementation. Foods rich in vitamin D include:
Ffatty fish (like salmon and mackerel), fortified dairy products, and egg yolks. However, it can be challenging to get adequate amounts from diet alone.
Sunlight exposure also helps the body produce vitamin D, so spending some time outdoors can be beneficial.
To treat her deficiency, vitamin D supplements can help. The dosage will depend on her specific needs and the severity of her deficiency.
For prevention, ensuring adequate vitamin D intake through diet, sun exposure, and possibly supplements can help and also check for CBC (complete blood count), vitamin B12 levels.
I hope this has helped you. Please feel free to reach me again, in case of further queries.
Thank you.
