How can I help my 6-year-old with vomiting?
Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My six-year-old boy has been vomiting since last night. He has vomited around four to five times till now. As earlier, we were at a family outing and ate noodles with chili paneer this evening.
My boy has also eaten those things, and when he vomits, the noodles are getting out in their original form.
-
Now what to do this time at four in the morning?
-
Which syrup or medicine should we give him so he gets some relief till the proper morning or till the doctor checks him up?
Please advise urgently.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
Thank you for sharing your concern.
As a child specialist, I can understand your concern.
From your history of babies, this sounds most likely like acute gastritis or food-related stomach upset after the outing. The most important thing right now is to prevent dehydration.
Please avoid the following foods:
Do not give heavy food.
Milk.
Noodles.
Spicy food.
Oily food for now.
Instead, give small sips of ORS (oral rehydration solution) every five to ten minutes. Even if he vomits, continue giving very small amounts frequently. Once vomiting settles, you can start bland foods such as
Toast.
Rice.
Banana.
Apple puree.
Khichdi.
If your child is six years old and continues to vomit, a pediatrician may prescribe Ondansetron, but I would not recommend starting prescription medication without knowing his weight and medical history.
Please seek urgent medical care if the baby have following signs
He cannot keep any fluids down.
He becomes sleepy or difficult to wake.
There is severe abdominal pain.
There is blood or a green color in the vomit.
He passes very little urine.
He develops a high fever.
Please tell me
His current weight.
Whether he has diarrhea.
Whether he has a fever.
Whether he is able to drink water or ORS without vomiting.
Based on that, I can guide you further regarding medication and next steps. I am available for your child.
I hope it helped with the query.
Please let me know if you have any more questions on your mind.
I would be happy to guide you.
Thank you.
