My whole family has vomiting and diarrhea. How to manage it?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My whole family has been down with vomiting and diarrhea for the past day. It started with my seven-year-old, then my wife and I got it, and now even my mother-in-law is sick. We cannot keep anything down, not even water.

It has been almost 30 hours, and it is still ongoing. I have heard that norovirus is going around. Could this be it? How can we prevent it from spreading further?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for sharing your concern.

Symptoms like vomiting, along with multiple episodes of loose stools and abdominal pain, could be due to bacterial or viral gastrointestinal infection. Some complications of gastrointestinal infection include dehydration, lethargy, and other symptoms. Dehydration could be serious if water intake is not maintained.

Please look out for the following signs of severe dehydration. If any of these signs are seen, please go to the emergency department.

  • Lethargy or less activity than usual.
  • Pale and sunken eyes.
  • Cold hands or feet.
  • Faster breathing and heart rate.
  • Irritability, drowsiness, or confusion.
  • Dark yellow pee or less frequent urination.
  • Reduced skin elasticity.

As you mentioned, norovirus, you can definitely confirm it with a stool examination. I will suggest you undergo a few more tests, like a complete blood count, if symptoms persist.

Make sure everyone stays hydrated. ORS (oral rehydration solution) is key. Antibiotics or antivirals are only needed if a doctor confirms it is a bacterial or viral infection. Additionally, keep up good hygiene, wash your hands regularly, clean fruits and veggies well, and cook meat and vegetables thoroughly. These small steps go a long way in keeping infections from spreading.

Disinfecting areas contaminated with norovirus is crucial due to the virus's highly contagious nature. It can be done by following these steps:

  • Clean the surface first: Always use disposable gloves to protect yourself from exposure. Before disinfecting, clean the surface with soap and water to remove visible dirt and debris.
  • Use a suitable disinfectant: Check for disinfectant products labelled as effective against norovirus or other viruses with similar resistance, such as Clostridium difficile or rotavirus. You can use a diluted bleach solution (1/3 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water). Ensure the solution is fresh and the area is well-ventilated when applying.
  • Apply the disinfectant: Apply the disinfectant generously to the contaminated surface. Ensure the disinfectant sits on the surface for the required time (usually five to 10 minutes) to effectively kill the virus.
  • Wipe down surfaces: After allowing the disinfectant to sit for the recommended time, wipe down the surface with clean paper towels or disposable cloths.
  • Launder contaminated fabrics: Wash any contaminated fabrics in hot water (at least 140°F or 60°C) with a good detergent. Add bleach if safe for the fabric.
  • Dispose of gloves and materials properly: After cleaning, dispose of all disposable materials in a sealed trash bag to prevent further contamination.
  • Wash your hands: Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds after cleaning.

Always ensure that cleaning and disinfecting procedures are thorough and repeated as necessary, especially in high-traffic or frequently touched areas.

Your symptoms can be due to norovirus infection; no antibiotics are given in this viral infection. Symptom treatment, like Cyclopam for abdominal pain, and ORS can only be taken for the whole family. If severe signs of dehydration are observed, kindly consult your physician.

I hope this helps.

Take care.
