What is an effective and safe way to lose 25 pounds with ADHD?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am looking to lose weight quickly and safely. I have never felt truly slim, and despite working out regularly, excess fat still hides my progress. I need to lose about 25 pounds as soon as possible. I am currently taking Melatonin and have previously used ADHD medications for the same concern. What is the most effective and healthy way to reach my goal? Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

What you are going through is something many people experience, and you are definitely not alone. Setting a goal to lose 25 pounds, which gives you about four to five months, is both realistic and healthy if approached consistently.

Since you are already exercising, the next step is to focus on structured nutrition, stress management, and long-term consistency. Aiming for a caloric deficit of 500 to 700 calories per day can help you lose about 1 to 1.5 pounds per week, a steady and sustainable pace.

If possible, try working with a registered dietitian, who can help you create a meal plan that includes adequate protein, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates. This can help reduce cravings, support your energy, and manage emotional eating. Crash diets are not recommended, as they often slow your metabolism and lead to burnout.

For emotional eating, consider tools like CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy, a therapy that helps change habits) or use apps to track triggers and build healthier eating patterns.

Since you are on ADHD (attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder) medication, which can impact appetite, energy, and mood, it is especially important to monitor your nutrition, hydration, and mental health. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of quality sleep, and do not hesitate to seek out medical or emotional support when needed.

Remember, the goal is not just to be thinner; it is to feel stronger, healthier, and more balanced in your body and mind.

I hope this helps.

Kindly revert so I can assist you further.

Thank you.
