Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am an 18-year-old female, approximately 4 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 66 pounds. For the past two to three weeks, I have been experiencing sudden weight loss, irregular periods, breast discomfort, increased hair fall, a persistent cold and cough, and occasional episodes of increased hunger. I am not taking any medications, and I do not have previous medical records available. Could you please help me understand what might be causing these symptoms?
Thank you for your time and support.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Your symptoms of weight loss in a short period, irregular periods, breast discomfort, increased hair fall, a persistent cough or cold, and at times increased appetite over the last few weeks are significant and need to be assessed as soon as possible. A weight of 66 pounds is significantly less for the height and age you have reached, and this alone can lead to hormonal imbalances and menstrual changes. However, the combination of weight loss and increased appetite may also indicate conditions such as an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), an ongoing infection, or nutritional deficiencies. The persistent cough could also suggest a chest or sinus infection.
It is best if the admitting physician performs the proper thyroid function analysis, including thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), Triiodothyronine (T3), Thyroxine (T4), complete blood count (CBC), blood sugar levels, vitamin levels, and, if necessary, chest X-rays, along with a complete physical workup. Meanwhile, focus your efforts on taking in more nutritious, high-calorie foods in small portions frequently, keeping your fluid intake up, and resting adequately.
Please make sure to see a doctor in the next few days so the underlying cause can be identified and treated accordingly.
I hope this helps.
Kindly revert if there are any queries.
Thank you.
