Is a Western blot valid after 16 weeks of exposure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 26-years-old. Doctor has recommended western blot for HIV 1 and 2 as a screening test. I obtained a negative western blot (RIBA) for HIV 1 and 2. I also had a negative CMIA test at 12 weeks post exposure.

My questions are:

1) Is a negative western blot 100% accurate and reliable at 16 weeks post exposure?

2) If western blot is so accurate, why is it not used as a screening test ?

3) Is a six month retest required despite a negative WB at 16 weeks?

4) Will active CMV increase the window period?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The answers to your queries are:

  1. Western blot test at 16 weeks is extremely accurate. However, as antibodies might take variable time to develop, therefore the tests are recommended at repeat intervals.

  1. These days HIV rapid tests give nearly the same accuracy as western blot, these are used as screening strategies as results are given in a few minutes and also cost effective as tests need to be repeated.

  1. Get your eye examination done.

  1. Active CMV seen in advanced HIV disease, is it documented anywhere. You need to relax. Your western blot is negative.

Hope your query has been answered, if you still have some, please revert.

Thank you for consulting me.

You can always come back and reach me at icliniq.com.
