Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I am a virgin and not sexually active. It has been seven months since I had a yeast infection. I used Clotrimazole cream for nearly one month, but it did not work. Over time, the discharge has reduced, but the vaginal itchiness persists. The itching comes and goes, and when it occurs, it is very intense.
Kindly advise.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Based on your history, you are an 18-year-old virgin experiencing persistent vaginal itching for the past seven months, which began in mid-November 2024. The symptoms initially resembled a yeast infection, including vaginal discharge that has since decreased. However, the itching continues intermittently and can be quite intense. You used Clotrimazole (an antifungal) cream for approximately one month without complete relief and have not taken any additional treatment since then.
It is important to note that even in individuals who are not sexually active, recurrent or treatment-resistant yeast infections can occur. In some cases, the cause may not be a yeast infection at all, but rather another condition leading to chronic vulvovaginal irritation. Possible causes include recurrent candidiasis caused by a resistant strain of Candida, contact dermatitis or irritant reactions from products such as soaps, sanitary pads, or hygiene sprays, lichen sclerosus, eczema, bacterial vaginosis, or non-infectious forms of vaginitis.
Given that your symptoms have not resolved with topical Clotrimazole, it is advisable to undergo a pelvic examination and laboratory testing, such as a vaginal swab, to accurately determine the cause. In cases of resistant or long-standing yeast infections, oral antifungal treatment such as Fluconazole (a Triazole antifungal agent) may be necessary, administered according to a specific regimen.
If you would like, I can assist further through a confidential online consultation. During the session, we can explore your symptoms in more detail, assess any hygiene practices or products that may be contributing to the irritation, and recommend appropriate treatment.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
Thank you.
