How the Snellen Chart Works

The Snellen chart displays 11 rows of capital letters contained in separate lines that get progressively smaller. Each line corresponds to a visual acuity score, such as 20/20, 20/30, or 20/40.

  • 20/20 vision: Normal clarity.
  • 20/30 or 20/40: Slightly reduced clarity (may need corrective lenses).
  • 20/60 or worse: A professional eye examination is recommended.

Example: If you have 20/40 vision, it means you must stand 20 feet away to read what a person with normal vision can read at 40 feet.
