How is Lean Body Mass (LBM) calculated?

The Lean Body Mass can be calculated using three different formulas as set forth below to find the lean body mass.

Boer Formula:
Male : (0.407 * weight in kg) + (0.267 * height in cm) - 19.2
Female : (0.252 * weight in kg) + (0.473 * height in cm) - 48.3

Using this method, the Lean Body Mass of a male is calculated first by multiplying the height in centimeters with 0.267 and multiplying the weight in kilograms by 0.407. The two values are added to get the gross result. Finally, 19.2 is subtracted from the gross result to give the Lean Body Mass of a male.

Likewise, the Lean Body Mass of a female is calculated first by multiplying the height in centimeters with 0.473 and multiplying the weight in kilograms by 0.252. The two values are added to get the gross result. Finally, 48.3 is subtracted from the gross result to give the Lean Body Mass of a female.
James Formula:
Male : (1.1 * weight in kg) - 128 * (weight in kg / height in cm)2
Female : (1.07 * weight in kg) - 148 * (weight in kg / height in cm)2

Using the James Formula method, Lean Body Mass of a male is calculated by first multiplying the weight in kilograms with 1.1. Then, 128 is subtracted from the arrived number to give the first component. Meanwhile, the weight in kilograms is divided by the height in centimeters and the answer is squared to obtain the second component. The first and the second component are multiplied to give the Lean Body Mass of a male.

Likewise, the Lean Body Mass of a female is calculated by first multiplying the weight in kilograms with 1.07. Then, 148 is subtracted from the arrived number to give the first component. Meanwhile, the weight in kilograms is divided by the height in centimeters and the answer is squared to obtain the second component. The first and the second component are multiplied to give the Lean Body Mass of a female.
Hume Formula:
Male : (0.32810 * weight in kg) + (0.33929 * height in cm) - 29.5336
Female : (0.29569 * weight in kg) + (0.41813 * height in cm) - 43.2933

Using the Hume Formula, the Lean Body Mass of a male is calculated in two components. The first component is arrived at by multiplying the weight in kilograms with 0.32810 and the second component is arrived at by multiplying the height in centimeters by 0.33929. Then, 29.5336 is subtracted from the total of the above two components. The final result is the Lean Body Mass of a male.

Likewise, the Lean Body Mass of a female is calculated in two components. The first component is arrived at by multiplying the weight in kilograms with 0.29569 and the second component is arrived at by multiplying the height in centimeters by 0.41813. Then, 43.2933 is subtracted from the total of the above two components. The final result is the Lean Body Mass of a female.
