Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had unprotected sex. I am worried but I have taken an I-pill within 24 hours. Will I get pregnant?

Answered by Dr. Balakrishnan R

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I do not see any reason to worry about it. As you have taken emergency contraceptive pills within 24 hours, you are safe now. These pills are very effective within 72 hours, the earlier the better. They make the inner lining of the uterus unfavorable for a possible baby to get implanted. But the effectiveness of the pills also depends on which phase of the cycle you have taken it. Let me explain in simple terms. In a female with 28 days cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14, which is 14 days before periods, so in a 34th-day cycle, it will be on day 20, and so on. So if you have had sex before this ovulation and taken medicine too before that, the chances of pregnancy are very low. The life of an egg is only 24 hours, so if you had sex and took pills 48 to 72 hrs after ovulation again pregnancy chance is very low. In the day between these, chances of pregnancy are there. This pill is very effective, but very rarely failure can occur. If all is fine you will have periods within 7 to 10 days. If you do not get periods even after one week of your expected periods, you will need to have urine tested for pregnancy. I hope I have cleared your query, Do write back if any more queries.

Thank you.
