Can appendicitis cause right lower abdominal pain and fever?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My 8-year-old daughter has had quite severe stomach pain for three days. It started in her navel and is now in her lower abdomen on the right-hand side. She has had on-and-off low-grade temperatures and nausea. She has pain in her legs and some pain in her back. Also, she has lost her appetite.

We went to our GP, who sent us to our local hospital, and they discharged us after our blood tests were normal. She did have white cells in her urine and told us to come back if she was in agony. She is still having pain and has a temperature.

My dad is a retired GP and thinks that the pain is where her appendix is. Should I go to another hospital to scan her to make sure? I do not want to let this get worse.

I would appreciate your advice.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concerns.

The pain that you have described appears to be due to appendicitis. In appendicitis also the pain also starts at the umbilicus region and spreads to the right side of the umbilicus. I suggest you do an abdominal ultrasound immediately to rule out appendicitis. White cells in urine do not result in so much pain.

You should meet a pediatrician or a surgery specialist and get the child examined. Get a review here with the report.

I hope that you get your answer.

Please let me know if you need any help.

Thank you.
