Have you experienced a side stitch during physical activity?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 24-year-old male, 5 feet 4 inches tall, and weigh 138.8 pounds. I am a professional cricket player and engage in other sports as well. Recently, for the past 20 days, I have been experiencing pain under my right rib cage (just under the diaphragm or in the diaphragm area) while walking or running for more than a minute. However, I do not feel this pain while cycling. I have had gas problems for 5-6 years and mild IBS symptoms for 2 years, although they are not extreme. Can you please tell me the cause of this pain? Is it a cramp or something else? Which doctor should I consult?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Pain in the upper right part of the abdomen below the diaphragm during physical activity is common. It is known as a side stitch or, medically, as exercise-related transient abdominal pain. It may be helpful to warm up and stretch before strenuous activity and take breaks from time to time. The exact cause of this pain is unknown.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
