Are brown fiber-like clots during periods considered normal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am an 18-year-old female. I noticed brown fiber-like blood clots in my period. I also had a PCOD problem. I used to get periods once every two or three months, but this time I got two periods within two weeks. Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern. Brown discharge can be due to vaginal infection (bacterial or fungal) due to unprotected sex or improperly treated urinary tract infection. I suggest you Doxycycline 100 mg tablet twice a day after food for five days to prevent bacterial infection. It can also be due to ovarian cysts, abdominal infection, or the use of contraceptive methods. You need to do an ultrasound scan of the pelvis to diagnose the exact cause. Kindly follow up with the results. Thank you.
