Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 19-year-old girl. I have recently found out that I am five weeks pregnant. However, I am not ready for a baby yet, and I would like to medically terminate my pregnancy. May I know what are the risks of getting an abortion done at this stage of pregnancy? Is this going to affect my fertility in the future? How early can I resume work and studies after the abortion? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can understand your concern.

The risks of getting an abortion depend on the type and timing of the procedure. Generally, abortion is a safe and common health intervention, but it may have some side effects or complications, such as:

  1. Bleeding, cramping, or pain.
  2. Infection or fever.
  3. Incomplete abortion or retained tissue.
  4. Damage to the cervix, uterus, or other organs.
  5. Allergic reactions to medications.
  6. Emotional reactions or mental health issues.

These risks are rare and can be prevented or treated by a qualified healthcare provider. The earlier you have an abortion, the lower the chances of complications.

Having an abortion does not usually affect your fertility or future pregnancies. You can ovulate and become pregnant again within two weeks after an abortion, so it is important to use contraception or abstain from sex if you do not want to get pregnant. There is a very small risk of developing scarring in the uterus after a surgical abortion, which may cause infertility or pregnancy complications. This condition is called Asherman syndrome, and it is very rare. The recovery time after an abortion varies from person to person and depends on the type and stage of the abortion. Most people will feel well and resume their normal activities within a few days. However, some people may need more time to heal physically and emotionally.

Some tips for self-care after an abortion are:

  1. Rest and relax as much as you need.
  2. Take painkillers as prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Use pads instead of tampons for bleeding.
  4. Avoid sex, douching, or inserting anything into your vagina for at least a week or until your doctor says it is safe.
  5. Follow up with your doctor for a check-up and contraception advice.
  6. Seek support from your friends, family, or a counselor if you feel sad, guilty, angry, or confused.

Thanks for using icliniq, and have a nice day.
