What are the management options for nodular acne?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am looking for a dermatologist consultation. I always get pimples that are red at first, and later become painful and pus-filled. Though it is small or large, with or without pus it will not go on its own. I have to drain it out which is causing scars. Please suggest some medicine or treatment for this. It occurs frequently and is persistent, I want clear skin.

Kindly suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have examined your picture (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). It looks like acne vulgaris, a common skin problem in adolescents and adults. It involves pilo-sebaceous follicles, or oil glands, and therefore is seen to involve areas where oil glands are dense, like the face, chest, back, and upper arms, which are common sites of involvement. In your case, it looks like grade 1 to grade 2 acne. You can start using Clindamycin topical 1% w/w and Nicotinamide 4% w/w during the day over pimples and Benzoyl Peroxide 3.5% gel at night over the whole face for around two to three months. For cleaning your face, you can use face wash twice daily. You have to do certain dietary restrictions, like not eating oily, spicy food, junk food, milk products, and non-vegetarian foods. Drink lots of water, which hydrates your skin. I hope you find this helpful.

Thank you.
