What could be the reason for discharge of greenish-yellow mucus while coughing?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 57 years old. I have had chest congestion for the past ten days along with severe sinus issues in my cheeks, eyes, and jaw. When coughing or blowing my nose, the mucus was green, and now it is yellow. I have been taking over-the-counter medications, but nothing helped.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. The symptoms you have been experiencing for the last ten days indicate that you have acute sinusitis. Sinusitis lasting more than ten days requires antibiotic treatment, especially when you have greenish-yellow discharge. I want to inform you that the antihistamine with pseudoephedrine combination dries up normal secretion, adversely affecting your blood pressure, as you are hypertensive.

I suggest you follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Check your blood pressure daily.
  2. Drink plenty of water.
  3. Take one tablet of Augmentin 1 gm every 12 hours for seven days.
  4. Use nasal spray.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
