Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My family did not tell me until I was 27 that I had ADHD, although I think I had it since I was a youngster. After years of trying and failing, I finally started taking the Atomoxetine tablet ten days ago. But I still get distracted very easily, and my symptoms appear to be getting worse. I had access to light drugs like weed and continued to use them for years, but I recently quit that job, began retraining for a programming career, and wanted a fresh start.

The difficulty is that I need to focus most of the time, yet I need to be more focused on everything in my environment. For example, I might spend hours mending something that is already broken, useless, and of no value to me. Instead of accomplishing my job and the things I need to do, I might waste hours mindlessly searching the web or making something completely random. I am trying to figure out how to prioritise my life. I do not realise how quickly time passes, but I have always had a secret shame over wasting it doing strange activities. What can I do to keep my life focused on study and work? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have thoroughly read your query and understand your problem.

In your case, there are some internal conflicts. A conflict is two forces acting in opposite directions. For example, your mind is telling you to opt for one thing while emotions are not supporting it, and this conflict creates anxiety. To avoid these uncomfortable situations, you involve yourself in useless activities like repairing a useless object. We can say it is a kind of escape for you, but it then creates a guilt of wasting time, increasing your anxiety and trapping you in a vicious cycle. I suggest you have counseling sessions to vent out all the stress and improve your mental health and concentration. Also, It will be beneficial if you practice yoga or mental stability through a trainer.

If you need my help, you can always connect with me on icliniq.

Hope this has answered your query.

Kind regards.
