Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My child who is 20 months old has a beta thalassemia trait. Her immunization is up to date. She has no complaints now. Her recent routine blood tests (LFT) revealed a little bit of an increase in SGOT value. Some abnormalities in the hemogram are also observed. I am sending you the reports and I request you to kindly go through those reports.

I have not given her Albendazole till now. Can I give it for routine deworming? Are there any risks or contraindications? If it can be given what is the correct dosage? Please advise based on my child's health condition.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I went through her reports (the attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

1. Yes, you can do deworming with Albendazole (antiprotozoal agent).

2. Dose for less than two years old is 5 ml (one teaspoon).

3. The reports are normal. SGOT is raised which is transient and insignificant.

4. Anemia is there.

Hope it helps.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

My doubts regarding Albendazole are cleared. She does seem to have anemia because her ferritin is a bit on the lower side. What is the correct dosage of iron drops for my daughter considering she has beta thalassemia minor? For how many months should I give iron drops?

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

1. Usually in thalassemia, iron supplements are not recommended as it is counterproductive.

2. But, you can add food items that are rich in Iron.

3. I strongly recommend taking a pediatric hematologist's opinion and consultation for further management and treatment.

Feel free to connect if any other concerns.

Happy to serve you.

Thanks and regards.
