Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have been prescribed 75 mg of Clopidogrel for a stent that was recently fitted in my heart. I am a bodybuilder, so I wanted to know if taking anabolic steroids, T3, Clenbuterol, and Isotretinoin would reverse the effects of Clopidogrel and increase my risk of complications with the stent.
Will taking anabolic steroids affect 75 mg of Clopidogrel?
Please suggest.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
The relationship between Clopidogrel and other substances is not straightforward.
Firstly, I would like to point out that there is limited data available on this topic, as there are very few patients in this category, making definitive answers hard to come by. Regarding anabolic steroids, there are no randomized controlled trials to provide a clear answer.
However, anabolic steroids are known to be thrombogenic and may increase the risk of clotting, as supported by studies. They can also have other cardiac effects, such as hypertrophy and dyslipidemia. Therefore, it is better to avoid the use of anabolic steroids, as they may antagonize the effects of Clopidogrel.
As for T3, it can increase heart rate and myocardial oxygen demand, which may be deleterious if there is ongoing ischemia or significant blockages in some arteries. However, it may be used with proper monitoring and in optimal dosages.
Similarly, Clenbuterol should not be taken in excess, as higher dosages can also lead to an increased heart rate. Isotretinoin has some potential cardiac adverse effects but can be taken in optimal dosages; however, the lipid profile should be monitored, and it should be used for the shortest duration possible.
I hope it helps.
Thank you.
Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
Thank you for the reply.
I was just advised that working out in the gym while taking Clopidogrel and Aspirin could cause bleeding in my tissues.
I feel really worried.
Please help.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome back to icliniq.com.
Bleeding is unlikely. Spontaneous bleeding is less common, but if an injury or trauma occurs, there is a risk of bleeding in the tissues or externally.
In general, heavy activities are prohibited for cardiac patients, so you may engage in moderate activities at the gym while taking care to avoid injury. Additionally, dual antiplatelet therapy should continue for one year; after that, you may need to switch to a single antiplatelet agent.
I hope this helps you.
Thank you.
