How dangerous can untreated hereditary angioedema become?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My younger brother was recently diagnosed with hereditary angioedema, and our whole family has been trying to understand the condition together. One thing that is really frightening us is how serious untreated attacks sound when we read about them online.

What can happen if hereditary angioedema goes untreated in a 47-year-old man? Before his diagnosis, he already had one episode of throat swelling, and at that time, we did not realize how dangerous it could have been. Looking back now, it is honestly very scary to think about.

We would like to understand how risky untreated attacks can become, especially throat or airway swelling, and whether repeated untreated episodes can lead to life-threatening complications over time.

Could you also explain how hereditary angioedema is usually managed long-term and whether proper treatment significantly lowers the danger from future attacks?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query.

It is completely understandable that your family feels frightened after learning what these attacks can involve, especially after realizing that the throat swelling episode could have become life-threatening.

Hereditary angioedema (a rare, genetic condition characterized by recurrent, unpredictable episodes of severe swelling) can become very serious when left untreated because the swelling attacks are unpredictable and may affect different parts of the body, including the hands, feet, face, abdomen, and airway.

The most dangerous complication is swelling of the throat or larynx, which can progressively block breathing and become a medical emergency within hours. Before effective treatments were available, some people with hereditary angioedema unfortunately died from airway attacks because the condition was not recognized or treated in time.

Abdominal attacks can also be severe and extremely painful, sometimes resembling other surgical emergencies and even leading to unnecessary procedures before the correct diagnosis is made.

At 47, untreated hereditary angioedema can also have a major emotional and physical impact over time. Many people begin living in constant fear of the next attack and may start avoiding travel, work, exercise, or social activities because of the unpredictability of symptoms.

The reassuring part is that getting the diagnosis often changes everything. Today, there are effective treatments that can stop attacks quickly as well as preventive therapies that significantly reduce how often attacks occur.

Since your brother has already experienced throat swelling, it is especially important that he now has a clear emergency plan, access to rescue medication, and regular follow-up with his treating doctor. Family members should also know when urgent medical care is needed.

Many people with hereditary angioedema are able to live full, active, and stable lives once the condition is properly recognized and managed.

I hope this answers your query.

Please let me know if I can assist you further.

Thank you.
