Can I move if I have a fracture in the ankle?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I sprained my ankle while playing football about four days ago on one leg and around two weeks before on the other one. It has been healing for about four days, and I can walk and put weight on it. Still, there is acute inflammation and tenderness on the outside ankle bone. When I searched online, it said that I might have a fracture if the lateral malleolus hurts. Do you think I have a fracture? I can walk normally for a bit but do have mild inflammation and pain later on.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you can walk, it is unlikely that you have a significant injury to the lateral malleolus. The primary indicator of a fracture is an inability to walk, massive swelling, and bruising over the outer ankle. However, you may need to use an ankle brace for a few weeks until the strength returns. I suggest you apply ice and take anti-inflammatory tablets if there is persisting pain.
