What findings does an X-ray of a fractured ankle reveal?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 18-year-old male and want my left ankle three X-rays analysis done.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. I have analyzed all three images that are attached (attachment removed to protect patient's identity), and I find a fracture across the middle phalanx of the fourth toe (the one before the little toe and pinkie). There is also some localized swelling around the fracture site. So, this means that you will need to consult the orthopedic emergency for further management. You may be aware that X-rays essentially show only bony injuries, so if the doctor finds any concern for soft tissue injury, they may advise an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). Till then, you can ask the patient to keep his foot horizontal or a bit elevated (by a pillow on the bed or on a chair) and to reduce movement of the foot or finger. Kindly note it is not a big injury and fully recovered with proper management. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for the response. Did you look for Lisfranc fracture?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It is good to note that all the MTP (metatarsal phalangeal) joints are intact and in alignment. So, Lisfranc injury is ruled out. I hope I have cleared all your doubts.

Thank you.
