What kind of diet can help control my mother's loose stools?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My mom suffers from arthritis, migraine, ulcers, and diabetes. She was recently diagnosed with a kidney stone (6.8 mm) as well. The main contributing factor to her condition has been stress.

Recently, she has been unable to keep any food in her stomach, as she needs to go to the washroom immediately after eating (she is experiencing loose stools). Could you please suggest a diet that would help her? With all these diseases, she is not able to eat properly.

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

For how long has she been experiencing this problem of loose motion, and what is her age?

I suggest she follow these steps:

  1. To address the loose stool problem, she can take one tablet of Norfloxacin TZ ( Norfloxacin and Tinidazole) twice a day for three days and one tablet of Pantoprazole 40 mg half an hour before breakfast for three days. Please consult the specialist doctor and then take the medications.
  2. She should follow an antidiabetic diet. She should avoid foods with a high glycemic index, such as sugar, potatoes, maize, rice, tea, and fruits with high sugar content like mangoes, bananas, grapes, and chocolates. A diabetic patient should consume gram flour (besan), salad, porridge (daliya), yogurt (curd), and high-fiber vegetables. They can also have brown bread, apples, papayas, pears, and guavas.
  3. She should engage in regular exercise.
  4. She should eat small, frequent meals (divided diet) at least five times a day.

As you mentioned, she has a kidney stone. Could you tell me which type of kidney stone she has? This way, I can provide diet recommendations tailored to her specific condition.

I hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
