What tests can help diagnose if I have adult-onset asthma?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 35-year-old man experiencing symptoms of difficulty in breathing, tightness in the chest, and wheezing as a result of the impacts of exercise, cold, and allergy exposure. Moreover, I wake up at night with trouble breathing.

Both my mother and brother have been diagnosed with asthma. Thus, there is a chance that I have developed adult-onset asthma.

  • What tests can be used for diagnosing asthma?

  • What treatment works best, and how can I prevent exposure to the triggers?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

The fact that one experiences difficulty breathing when exercising, being in a cold environment, and reacting to allergens, as well as the fact that one wakes up at night experiencing such symptoms and constant coughing, is proof of asthma in adults, given that there is a family history of the same.

Asthma is usually confirmed using tests on lung function such as spirometry. The test assesses the degree of obstruction in the lungs and how the obstruction can be managed using a bronchodilator. There are times when other tests might be required as well.

Treatment involves taking inhaled corticosteroids daily for the prevention of inflammation of the airways, as well as using short-acting bronchodilators to ease breathing in times of an asthma attack. In the case of persistent symptoms, long-acting bronchodilators may also be administered.

Preventive measures include avoiding asthma triggers such as allergens, cold weather, and engaging in physical activity when it is cold outside.

Collaboration with your health care provider in order to formulate an asthma action plan will go a long way in helping you gain control over your asthma. When properly managed, you will be able to lead a normal life despite having the condition.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
