Why does my 7-month-old baby refuse milk during a cold?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My baby is 7 months old. I have noticed that she is not drinking enough milk as before. Earlier, she drank about 23.33 fl oz, but now she only drinks up to 13.33 fl oz. I have also started feeding her solid foods, but she only eats up to four to five spoons and closes her mouth tightly after eating.

Presently she is suffering from a mild cold. I am also breastfeeding her, but my nipples appear lipstick shaped instead of round after feeding. What could be the reason for my baby not drinking enough milk?

Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Baby's feeding requirements vary, and they may not need as much as they previously required. In this case, according to your observation, she has symptoms of a mild cold, which can cause feeding refusal. In addition, she may have a nose block. I suggest you try using saline nasal drops. Another aspect is if she is bottle-fed, you must stop bottle-feeding and start feeding her with a spoon.

I advise you to visit the pediatrician to confirm that she is fine. And, please update me on the progress.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
