Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
My vagina smells bad for approximately nine months now, and I am not on any medication. I weigh 150 pounds and I am six feet tall.
Please help.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I understand your concern.
Experiencing a persistent vaginal odor for nine months without any medication is concerning and suggests an underlying health issue. Common causes include bacterial vaginosis (BV), which results from an imbalance in vaginal bacteria and often presents with a strong, fishy odor and grayish discharge.
Another possibility is trichomoniasis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by a parasite, leading to a strong odor and frothy yellow-green discharge. Additionally, a forgotten tampon or other foreign object can cause a severe, foul odor and abnormal discharge.
Poor hygiene practices or over-washing with harsh soaps can disrupt the natural pH balance of the vagina, leading to odor. In rare cases, conditions like a vaginal fistula, an abnormal connection between the vagina and bowel, can cause persistent odor.
It is essential to consult a gynecologist promptly. They may perform a pelvic exam, conduct vaginal swab tests for infections like BV, trichomoniasis, or yeast infections, and possibly recommend imaging studies if a fistula is suspected. Avoid self-treating with over-the-counter products or douches, as these can exacerbate the issue.
Maintaining proper hygiene with mild, unscented soap and water is advisable. Early medical intervention can help identify the exact cause and provide appropriate treatment to restore vaginal health.
I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.
