Can elevated levels of bilirubin be a sign of liver dysfunction?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My bilirubin levels are elevated. I had undergone blood tests last month and my levels are - Total bilirubin - 2.7 mg/dL, bilirubin direct - 0.7 mg/dL, bilirubin indirect - 2.0 mg/dL . I have undergone the tests again today and my results have come as - Total bilirubin - 2.36 mg/dL, bilirubin direct - 1.34 mg/dL, bilirubin indirect -1.02 mg/dL. Should I be concerned?

Please give me an answer.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Elevated bilirubin levels can be a sign of liver or bile duct dysfunction or other medical conditions. But it is important to interpret the results in the context of your overall health and medical history. In general, a bilirubin level of 2.7 mg/dL is considered high, while a level of 2.36 mg/dL is slightly lower, but still above the normal range. The change in your bilirubin levels over time may indicate improvement, but the elevated direct bilirubin level in your latest test suggests, ongoing liver or bile duct dysfunction. However, the interpretation of these results and any necessary follow-up depends upon your overall health status and any symptoms you may be experiencing. It may also be helpful to review your medical history, including any previous liver or gallbladder problems or medications you are taking.

I hope this has helped you out.

Thanks and regards.
