Is using Nexplanon a safer option than the withdrawal method for birth control?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am considering Nexplanon as birth control but I am not sure. I am an 18-year-old who only uses withdrawal as birth control at the moment. But I need to be safer and condoms cause a lot of irritation for me. I have used progestin-only pills in the past due to the migraines with aura which I had when I was younger. I had to stop it due to heavy prolonged bleeding. I have not had a migraine accompanied by an aura in almost two years. I am 6 feet 2 inches and my weight is 187 pounds. I take extended-release Amphetamines and Wellbutrin. I have a few questions about the implant before making a decision.

  1. How common it is to stop menstruating?
  2. How likely am I to have the same problem with the implant as with the minipill?
  3. How common is decreased sex drive?
  4. How common is a change in metabolism?
  5. How likely am I to develop blood clots or embolisms?
  6. Will it interact adversely with my medications?
  7. Is it available for people aged 18?
  8. Am I a good candidate for the implant?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Yes, the Nexplanon implant is for birth control. You can safely use the implant and there is no problem. The only thing is you may experience irregularities for about two to three months, till you get adjusted with it. The side effects of the implant are lesser compared to the minipill.

If you have a history of blood clots, then please do not go for an implant. However, if you have no history of clotting disorders, then you can go ahead and use it safely, as it will not create any problems. There will be a slight change in your metabolism, say mood swings, nausea, etc. But not as much as minipill and within a few days you will get adjusted to it. It will not interact with any medications which you are on.

And yes, you can get the implant done at your age. However, if you have a doubt then get an opinion from your gynecologist as well.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
