Bisacodyl is a triphenylmethane derivative and a stimulant laxative used in the treatment of constipation. They stimulate bowel contractions and increase their fluid secretion to help evacuate the colon. Oral administration at bedtime and the use of suppositories after breakfast are found to be effective. They are also used to empty bowels before a surgical procedure or diagnostic procedures. Side effects include diarrhea, abdominal pain, and nausea. Not more than five days of continuous use is recommended.
