How to arrest constant bleeding of gums from a broken tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My boyfriend has a broken tooth. A part of the tooth had come out about a month ago and the gums are bleeding continuously for the past four days. He is an alcoholic. What has to be done?

Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I can totally understand your concern.

Bleeding of gums can aggravate due to many reasons, such as, vitamin C deficiency, inflammation of gums, alcohol, severely decayed teeth requiring extraction or root canal treatment or any other medications. It is necessary to ascertain the actual cause of the bleeding.

I suggest you to take tablet Tranexamic acid 500 mg to control the bleeding. It is a temporary solution and should be used in case of emergency bleeding control. I also suggest you to keep icepack in that region to arrest the bleeding temporarily. Also, rinsing of mouth with lukewarm water five to six times per day will be useful. For the tooth itself, it might have to be extracted if it is severely decayed or root canal treated by an endodontist.

Also, testing of bleeding time, clotting time and complete blood count (CBC) might be required after the physical checkup by the dentist. If these measures do not provide any relief or the bleeding does not stop, consult a physician or dentist in person. I suggest you to quit alcohol completely while taking this medication and further refrain from consuming alcohol.

Please feel free to enquire about any doubts regarding the same and I will clear all your doubts. Follow up with me for antibiotic prophylaxis or replacement of tooth and gum protection.

Hope I have clarified your query.

Thank you.
