Which medications are safe for controlling hypertension?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 39 years old and weigh 154 pounds. My blood pressure is 130/80 mmHg, and I take Metoprolol succinate 50 mg once daily. Can I use a non-selective beta blocker instead of a selective beta blocker? Please advise if Amlodipine is a good option.

Answered by Dr. Rohit Jain

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your question is hypothetical. The reason is that every drug has both advantages and disadvantages. Metoprolol is an excellent medication for slowing down the heart rate without causing side effects in other organs, as it is a cardio-selective beta blocker. That said, if you do not have any associated features or specific causes, you should ask your doctor to follow the protocol of the JNC 8 (the Eighth Joint National Committee), which provides international guidelines for hypertension. I suggest taking Losartan once daily, as it is considered one of the safest options. However, the transition from beta blockers should be gradual, as sudden discontinuation could lead to withdrawal symptoms. Additionally, Amlodipine may not be a suitable choice for you. Please consult your specialist, discuss your options with them, and take any medication with their consent.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
