What are the causes of fluctuating blood pressure?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am 26 years old, and I have an issue with my blood pressure. It fluctuates. Sometimes, it is high (150/90 mmHg, 140/85 mmHg, 130/90 mmHg), and other times, it is normal (120/80 mmHg, 110/60 mmHg). I would like to ask if I need to consult a doctor and get some tests. If so, could you recommend which tests I should have? Or do you think it is normal to experience such fluctuations in blood pressure?

Please advise.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

You need to check your blood pressure daily, both first thing in the morning and before bed. Make sure you are resting for at least five minutes, and avoid eating or drinking for 30 minutes before taking the measurement. Record your readings for one week. If your blood pressure is consistently above 140, you should consult a doctor. Otherwise, you should focus on regular exercise, reducing salt intake, and cutting back on caffeine.

Thanks and regards.
