What do the blood reports with high WBC and HDL suggest?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I went through a health checkup program last week. There were some findings. WBC count was 10900 (normal being 4000 to 10500), and HDL cholesterol was at 38.

  1. Can you please check them?
  2. Are the values alright?
  3. Are there any further tests to be done?

Kindly assist.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I reviewed your query and the investigations (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity).

1. Your first question is about your WBC (white blood cell) count, which is 10900. The normal upper limit of WBC is 11000. As the distribution of WBCs into neutrophils and lymphocytes is normal in your case, it is a normal WBC count.

2. Your fasting blood sugar is impaired. You will need a regular exercise program to keep the blood glucose under control. Otherwise, you may develop diabetes in the future.

3. You can have a few walnuts daily for a low HDL (high-density lipoprotein).

I need to know if you smoke or not and whether you live in the hills. I also need to know your Hb (hemoglobin) and PCV (packed cell volume) levels.

Regards.
