Is the Ambroxol cough syrup safe to be used for an infant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My son is two months old and weighs six kilograms. His nose is blocked slightly and he makes a sound while breathing. He has breathing difficulties and has been breathing faster than normal since last night. The pediatrician prescribed the following treatment and medication.

  1. Hydrocodone and Acetaminophen infant drops for fever.
  2. Home nebulizer (normal saline 2 ml, Albuterol 0.2 ml, Budesonide 0.2 ml) eight-hour frequency.
  3. Amoxicillin and Clavulanate combination 20 ml infant drops 62.5 mg/ml.
  4. Ambroxol syrup for cough.

Is the Ambroxol cough syrup safe to be used for a two-month-old infant?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Your child has a common cold which is mostly caused by viruses. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Do not start the antibiotics (Amoxicillin and Clavulanate) or the cough syrup now.
  2. Use nebulization only in case of a bad cough.
  3. Use Oxymetazoline (nasal decongestant) pediatric nasal drops (one to two drops in both nostrils three times a day).
  4. Use isotonic saline solution drops (one to two drops in both nostrils three to five times a day). This will relieve his nasal block and his symptoms.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.
