Do I need to get stitches for broken glass injury?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Last night, I accidentally cut my thumb on a bit of broken glass from a photo frame. It looks fairly deep. I think I could see my bone. As I could not go to hospital yesterday night, I have covered it with plasters. Do I need to get stitches?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Based on the depth of the cut wound (attachment removed to protect patient identity), stitches will be necessary for proper closure. It is crucial to maintain the affected area's cleanliness and dryness throughout the healing process. To facilitate healing and prevent infection, washing the wound with lukewarm water and applying a topical antibiotic cream, such as Neosporin (Bacitracin, Neomycin, and Polymyxin-B) or Mupirocin, is advised. However, it is essential to consult a doctor, discuss your condition with them, and proceed with treatment only with their consent. The doctor may recommend oral antibiotics like Zifi 200 (Cefixime) to prevent infection and oral painkillers like Ibuprofen or Paracetamol to reduce inflammation and manage pain. Proper medical guidance and care will ensure optimal recovery and minimize complications
