Is prolonged dark brown discharge normal or a sign of disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 30 years old. From the age of 23 or 24, my period gap was 45 to 60 days. I was on medication for almost two years. All the tests are done, and there is no sign of PCOS. But for some time there has been dark brown or blood-like discharge but not periods. It looks like a type of white discharge mucus or clot and lasts for 10 to 15 days.

Is it a period or any other disease?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) is not the only cause of oligomenorrhea and hypomenorrhea. There are many other reasons for that, which must be ruled out. Have you done your thyroid profile and checked prolactin levels before this? If not, then please get it done. Taking progesterone for withdrawal bleeding is not a solution; you should take proper treatment for this so that there will not be any problem with your fertility. The spotting could be your menstruation but the scanty type. It would have been more helpful if you attached the previous reports.

I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a thyroid operation one year ago. After that, I did a thyroid test, and it was normal. The prolactin level was a little high, so I took medicine for that, and now it is also normal.

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I have gone through your reports, but these reports are from almost a year back. Even if that time they were normal, you should check these every six months because after stopping treatment, prolactin and thyroid levels might fluctuate. To regulate your periods, you should again start a hormonal course.

  1. May I know whether you are married or not?
  2. If you are married, then are you trying for a baby?

Kindly revert back for further help.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Yes, I am married, and we are trying to conceive.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I would suggest planning for a baby because it might take a long time to conceive. Please repeat your thyroid profile, prolactin level, and ultrasound. We will start the treatment accordingly.

I hope this helps.
