Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a male. My height is five feet and seven inches, and my weight is 170 pounds. I have no relevant medical issues and I am not on any medication. For one month, I have felt trouble speaking. I consulted with a neurologist because of other simultaneous issues and was cleared of any neurological cause. However, it felt like my tongue was swollen and sometimes numb. Today, I noticed this growth in the attached photos. What could this growth be? I just noticed it today when looking at my tongue, trying to figure out why my tongue feels swollen on that side and why I am having weird sensations when speaking. I am worried about cancer. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I reviewed the attached pictures (attachment removed for patient identity protection). I also cross-checked the same with the links you gave. I agree the symptoms you face are significant, and there is every reason to worry about cancer. However, the pictures do not show any growth or abnormality. Both sides look normal to me. I do not see any swelling. There are some prominent blood vessels on the side of the tongue on the abnormal side, but the tongue being a highly vascular organ, this finding is normal. 1. Can you provide me with more details of the problem? 2. Do you smoke or drink? 3. Do you use any chewable form of tobacco? 4. Do you vape? 5. Is it possible to describe the sensations which you get while speaking? 6. How long have you been having this problem? 7. What do you mean when you say trouble speaking? 8. What is your occupation? 9. According to you, is there any neurological deficit anywhere, not as per the neurologist? 10. Since when are you facing these issues? 11. Do you have any altered or decreased sensation of taste or smell? 12. Did you suffer from COVID -19 and recover recently? 13. Could you mention your weight in kilograms? Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your answer. My weight in 160.93 lb. I thought the yellowish spot below the blood vessels on the abnormal side was possibly a growth or swelling of some sort, as it is not present on the other side. I vape and drink. The sensations I feel are like a lazy tongue on the right side of my mouth, which is the side I believe to be abnormal. No one notices any slurring or difficulties speaking, but my tongue is either lazy or swollen on the right side, which I believe that photo could be possible evidence of. I am a salesperson. I have been having this problem for about a month. I do not have any more neurological deficits. I previously had weakness in the legs and hands. I was diagnosed with Beriberi after losing my appetite and heavy drinking, and I have since recovered through thiamine supplementation. Toward the end of having Beriberi, this feeling in my tongue started. I have not suffered from COVID-19 recently and have no altered or decreased taste or smell. Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The yellow spot is not abnormal. Do not worry about it at all. Beriberi can cause a weird feeling, like you are complaining. You must take adequate vitamin B complex supplements and plenty of green leafy vegetables. You can use warm saline gargles and use your voice in a restricted way (no shouting, no whispering, no high pitch, and no low pitch). Drink warm water frequently, and do not let the mouth and throat dry. Beriberi does cause some deficits in nerve endings. This will resolve once the vitamin gets replenished and the nerves get rejuvenated. It may take a week to 10 days, though. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
