What could cause burning sensation while urinating?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have burning sensation while urinating once or twice a day for the past six months. I had taken routine urine tests, urine culture, ultrasonogram, and diabetes test, but could not find the reason. Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Please share your reports again, as I cannot open files. Do you have a history of urinary tract infection or unprotected sexual intercourse? I suggest you do a urine GeneXpert test for acid-fast bacillus (AFB bacilli) to rule out genitourinary tuberculosis, which causes dysuria (pain or burning during urination). Do you experience pelvic pain? If so, I suggest a rectal examination to check the possibility of prostatitis. You can take antibiotics for two weeks and some alkalizer solutions orally. Consult your physician and take the medicines accordingly.

Hope I have answered your queries. In case of further queries, please revert.

Thank you.

The Probable causes

The probable cause is a urinary tract infection.

Investigations to be done

I suggest you do a urine gene Xpert for AFB. The first voided early morning sample should be collected for three days.

Differential diagnosis

The differential diagnoses can include prostatitis, urinary tract infection, and bladder pain syndrome.

Treatment plan

The treatment can be planned depending on the investigation.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have attached the files again. I had unprotected sex two years ago. I do not have pelvic pain. But I still have a burning sensation after urinating once a day.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Sorry to say, but not able to open your reports again. Were there any significant findings? Even if your urine routine and urine culture are normal, you can take some antibiotics like Nitrofurantoin for two weeks. Consult your physician and take medicines accordingly. Drink 67 to 101 ounces of water daily. If the symptoms do not resolve after two weeks, I suggest you get a urine GeneXpert test. Also, undergo a rectal examination to rule out prostatitis.

I hope this information will help you. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
