Can gargling with salt water and reducing oily food intake help prevent tonsillar stones?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have noticed a white patch inside my throat, and I am not experiencing any pain currently. I am worried about what it is. Can you please tell me the problem?

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I have carefully reviewed the picture (attachments removed to protect patient’s identity) you sent. The area of concern appears to be a tonsillar stone, which is a calcification of food debris that becomes lodged in the tonsillar crevices. This is not a serious issue that you should worry about. In some cases, individuals might experience bad breath, a condition known as halitosis. If this has been bothering you significantly, your ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon can gently remove it. I am confident that there is no need for you to worry, and it is not related to any cancer or malignancy. To prevent further deposits after removal, I recommend performing salt water gargles five to six times a day for a month, particularly after meals. Additionally, try to minimize the consumption of oily foods to prevent recurrence.

I hope this addresses your concerns. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask. We will respond as soon as possible.

Thanks and regards.
