Can hypothyroidism cause left-sided chest pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 21 years old. I have had left-sided chest pain for 40 days. The pain ranges from normal to severe and depends on time. The chest area gets tightened, causing pain in the back, shoulder, and left arm. Also, I have been suffering from fever for the last six to seven months, and my platelet count has increased to 475 thousand cells/microliter.

The temperature does not rise above 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but I feel feverish most of the time. I have been taking the tablet Thyronorm 37.5 mg for six months, and now my TSH profile is under control. ECG has been done three times, and only sinus tachycardia has been diagnosed. Unfortunately, my blood pressure also shoots up most of the time. I feel very uncomfortable and sometimes feel I will die because of chest pain. Kindly help.

Thank you.

Hello.

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You have hypothyroidism, for which you have been advised thyroxine. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not function properly. As a result, it can cause elevated blood lipid levels, blood pressure, generalized body pains, and aches. Regarding your chest pain, it is very rare to occur at such a young age due to heart problems. I suggest you continue taking the tablet Thyronorm and undergo thyroid function tests periodically. Hypothyroidism is treatable. Long-term fever and high heart rate may be due to an overdose of thyroxine, so an endocrinologist consultation is necessary. You can take painkillers like tablet Paracetamol or tablet Ibuprofen for the time being. Also, I suggest you avoid stress and anxiety, exercise regularly, pray often, live happily, and keep your family happy.

I hope this helps. Thank you.
