Can acid reflux cause chest pain?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been experiencing chest pain on the left side for four to five days, but both my lipid profile and 2D echocardiography reports are normal. What should I do? What could be the cause of the chest pain?

Please suggest.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Chronic reflux of stomach acids into the esophagus can irritate it. In severe cases, it can cause dysphagia. Scar tissue may develop in the esophagus, which can narrow it. This condition is known as an esophageal stricture. In some cases, dysphagia can be a direct result of esophageal damage. The lining of the esophagus may change to resemble the tissue that lines the intestines, a condition known as Barrett’s esophagus.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
