Is gallbladder stone surgery safe during early pregnancy?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am six weeks pregnant, and there is a stone of 3 to 4 mm in the gallbladder.

Can I get operated on for the same?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand that you are worried about gallstones, and it can be stressful while undergoing pregnancy. However, let me assure you that most gallstones do not cause any symptoms. Seeing as they are small in size, they can be easily left alone until after the mother has delivered the baby. The risk of miscarriage is always present whenever a pregnant woman undergoes any procedure.

Are there any symptoms that are bothering the mother? Like jaundice, uncontrollable pain, etc.?

I would also request you to share the investigation reports like LFT (liver function test and ultrasonography, as they will help us make a better decision.

Treatment:

Pain medication - Tablet Paracetamol 500mg SOS if having pain.

Preventive measure:

Avoid spicy and oily food.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
