How can I slow down my stage 3 CKD with a GFR of 48?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have recently learned I have stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD). My latest laboratory report showed a glomerular filtration rate (GFR) of 48 and creatinine at 1.6. I don’t feel sick, but I do have high blood pressure and take meds for it. Please tell me,

  1. Can you explain what stage 3 means?

  2. Is there a way to slow it down or even reverse it?

  3. Should I be watching my salt, protein, or potassium intake?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Stage three chronic kidney disease (CKD) is common, often stable, and manageable, especially when detected early, as in your case.

Stage three CKD means your kidneys are working at about 30 to 59 percent of normal capacity. With an eGFR (estimated Glomerular filtration rate) of 48 (attachments are removed to protect privacy), you are in stage 3a, which is the milder part of stage 3. Many people at this stage feel completely well, just like you, and may remain stable for many years.

I suggest making some dietary modifications, which can help slow progression:

  1. Low salt (sodium) intake, Moderate protein intake, not high, and normal portions of dal, eggs, fish, or chicken are fine unless advised otherwise

  2. Drink adequate fluids unless advised otherwise. There is no need to overdrink water.

Prognosis: Many people with stage 3 CKD never require dialysis and live normal lives, especially when blood pressure is well controlled, and follow-up is regular.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
