Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Is it fine and safe to take 10 mg of Citalopram twice daily instead of 20 mg of Citalopram once daily?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Citalopram tablets are recommended to be administered as a single daily dose either in the morning or evening. The usual dose is 20 mg daily but can go up further up to 40 mg daily. I presume you have been prescribed Citalopram to manage depression or anxiety or related emotional disorders. Can I clarify why you want to split the dose? If you are experiencing any side-effect like sedation you can take the dose at night time. How long have you been on Citalopram? Usually, you will get used to the medication by two weeks or so. If side effects are persistent and severe, kindly review with your prescribing doctor. Anecdotally, I have seen a few patients taking Citalopram twice daily instead of once daily. They have responded fine without any adverse effects. But once daily dosage is the well studied and recommended dosage plan. Thank you.
