What are the cons of coffee for cardiac patients?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I drink six to eight cups of coffee and tea during the day. Is coffee good for health? What are the cons of coffee for cardiac patients or those with heart conditions? Can it contribute to heart disease? Currently, I am taking Aspirin 75 mg.

Please advise.

Hello

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Moderate coffee consumption is generally good for health. Excessive caffeine intake can increase blood pressure and heart rate. I do not have information on your blood pressure. However, the echocardiogram (attachments removed to protect the patient’s identity) shows some changes that could be secondary to mild to moderate uncontrolled high blood pressure. The left ventricular wall thickness is 11 mm, which is slightly increased. The rest of the echocardiogram, as reported, is normal.

I hope this helps you.

Thank you.
