Is colposcopy needed after PAP smear test for long period?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 39 years old female. For the last three months, I am having a long period cycle for 10 days. The first day is flowing but rest days are spotting. I have done pap smear test as suggested by a gynecologist. The report is showing some metaplastic epithelial cells. I was suggested to do colposcopy. Please give me a second opinion.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your report (attachment removed to protect patient identity), could not read it completely as important part is missing from the picture. But, there is some chronic infection of the cervix that affected cervical histology and there are some changes in the cell. As you have been symptomatic as well means you had a complaint of spotting so it needs further evaluation. Cervical changes or infection with herpes can lead to cervical neoplasia. It is better to have a check now and get the full treatment in early stage rather than deal with complications. Colposcopy is just investigations, not complicated. In the early stage, they can have treatment during colposcopy as well but in case of severe disease things become really complicated (need complicated surgeries even cancer, painful treatment). Care is better in advance.

Thanks and regards.
