How and when to use an over-the-counter nasal spray?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 45-year-old male and I travel a lot. I get frequent colds and related symptoms. Is it good to use a nasal spray that I got over the counter?

I mostly take a few antihistamines and my symptoms would get relieved. For the last three days, I had a runny nose and now it is blocked.

1. Can I use a Fluticasone nasal spray to get relief?

2. Is that safe to use?

3. And how many times in a day should I use it and how?

Please guide me.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

I would like to know if you have been diagnosed with allergic rhinitis, asthma, or any other allergic conditions.

Fluticasone nasal spray is an intranasal steroid usually prescribed for allergic respiratory conditions. It works by reducing the immune response to inhaled allergens. It should not be used to treat common cold or other infectious conditions as it can make them worse.

The dose of Fluticasone is two sprays in each nostril usually, provided that each spray is 50 micrograms in strength. The strength of each spray should be written on the drug pack.

I hope you get well soon.

Thank you.
