I have a slightly swollen lower left eyelid for three days. Is it an STD?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a slight swelling in the lower left eyelid for the past three days. But the swelling has not increased or decreased. I do not have pain or irritation or itching on it. Normally, I do not worry about anything. But I am worried if it could be due to STD. I had sex with my partner before eleven days. But we had protected sex. I am attaching the picture of the eye. The swelling present in my left lower lid is shown in the first picture and the second picture shows another eye that is totally normal.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your picture shows mild conjunctivitis (attachment removed to protect patient identity). You need an eye ointment. Apply a warm compress for ten minutes over the inflamed area for three days. Apply Tobradex ointment (Tobramycin and Dexamethasone) four times a day for two weeks over the inflamed area. Please apply it on the inside of the eye by pulling the lower eyelid down and then close your eyes for five to ten seconds to spread it.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

Is it due to STD?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, it is unlikely to have it due to STD (sexually transmitted diseases).

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

I start to apply Tobradex. Is it contagious? Can it spread to my family members?

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Yes, it can spread to your family members. Please tell your family members to avoid touching their eyes and they need to do frequent hand washing.
